Online Job Boards
These are employment websites that list jobs in different categories and allow you to post your resume for prospective employers to read. Depending on the job board website, you might be able to upload your resume from a file on your computer or you might have to copy and paste onto the job application system. Other services offered include job matching to your skills and experience, help writing a resume and recruitment services for agencies and employers.
There are usually several online job boards in most countries. Some are government run while others are privately owned. There may be a fee to use the services but most are free to use.
As a job seeker, you register to use the website, lodge your resume and then browse the job listings. You can then apply for any positions that suit you, online from the website, attaching your resume to your application. A cover letter may also be required.
When you register with some job boards, you might be required to write a profile by filling in the blanks on an online form. This profile helps employers find you and includes employment history, salary, education etc. You need to make sure your resume includes all your contact details to make it easy for the employer or agency to get in touch with you.
Generally, you can track the jobs you have applied for on the job boards website and have emails sent to you, listing new positions that have been added to the site that fit your profile.
Job Search Engines
Save time by using a job search engine. These search through a wide variety of media to find jobs that fit your description, such as newspapers, online job boards, company websites and professional associations. You are effectively looking for all available jobs in the one place.
Online Search for Jobs
This is a process in which you enter a keyword or phrase into your search engine to find jobs of interest to you. This method can be very effective as you are able to refine your search to meet your specific requirements. For example, if you are looking for a middle management marketing job in your local area, you can use keywords such as “marketing’, ‘middle management’ and your home town. Your search engine will then search the entire listings for these keywords.
Experiment with different keywords to get the best job search results from this method.
There are job search websites where you can register with your LinkedIn or Facebook user name and password. You can also use these and other social media sites to search for jobs or advertise that you are looking for work.
This is a great method if there is a particular company you want to work for. Most company websites have a section for ‘Careers’, ‘Job Vacancies’ or list jobs in their ‘About Us’ section. Instructions for how to apply are usually included on the company website; make sure you follow these instructions carefully to give yourself the best chance of success.
Whatever method you use to apply for a job online, make sure you follow the directions explicitly. Some of the things you may be asked for include a cover letter, resume, a profile and even an employment test. Before submitting all the necessary documents, make sure you proof-read every page. Better still, get someone else to proof it for you as they are more likely to pick up errors which can lessen the professionalism of your job application.
